Selection Process for the squad to represent Ireland at the 2013 European and World Championships.
As part of the ongoing development of the national team, we are introducing some changes to the selection process for 2013. The principle change is the introduction of ranking points based on performances in designated events during 2012 . These points will count towards selection for the 2013 Europeans. Depending on the timing of the 2013 World Championships, selection may be based on designated events during 2012 and 2013 but the principle will remain the same. The objective of this process is to;
1 Move away from a situation where performance at one tournament decides everything
2 Increase the competition at national level
3 Allow competitors to test themselves in an environment that most closely resembles our ultimate performance environment
4 Ensure that squads are focused on improvement and development.
The designated events for 2012 are as follows
18/19 Feb - Cork Open
10/11 Mar - INTA Open
20-22 April - European Championships
19th - 20th May Dublin Open
2012 Combined ITF Championships *
4 - 7 Oct - World Cup
Nov - Irish Cup date tbc
* This event has yet to be confirmed. If it does not proceed, another tournament will be designated.
Weight limits at each national event will be enforced to within .5 kg
Each event will be seeded with two seeds in each event. For the first event, the National Team coaches will determine the top two seeds in each division who will be placed at opposite sides of the draw. Seeding for each subsequent event will be based on scores accrued in designated events.
Competitors will have the option of selecting their best scores in 4 of the six events. Selection permitting, competitors can compete in all six events but only the scores from their four best events will count. This allows for people to take rests if deemed necessary and allows for absence due to injury.
We will award the following points in each division in National events
1st = 3
2nd = 2
3rd = 1
For open International championships including World and European cups, the following points shall be awarded
1st = 4
2nd = 3
3rd = 2
For European and World Championships, the following points shall be awarded
1st = 5
2nd = 4
3rd = 3
The points accrued at world/european cups and championships will only apply to individual events provided there has been at least one competitive win i.e. you cannot accrue points by simply receiving a bye to a semi-final or final.
The Director of Coaching will be responsible for keeping a total points tally and the person with the highest total in each event at the conclusion of the 2012 Irish
Cup will represent Ireland in that section at the 2013 European Championships. Depending on timing, that person may also represent Ireland at the 2013 World Championships.
In the case of junior competitors, the top ranked competitor in each division will be selected automatically for the 2013 European Championships. Any decision to enter a second or third competitor in any division will be made by the coaching team having regard to form, the potential of individual competitors and the need to develop a pool of International class talent.
In the event of two competitors having an equal points total, rankings will be based on the results of face to face matches between those competitors. In the event that both have the same number of wins in face to face matches, the coaches will determine the rankings.
For people changing division (due to age, grade or weight changes) they be allowed to carry over points from no more than two of their previous divisions ie, if
they change division , then two of their four scores must be accrued in the new division.
Team selections
Again, depending on timing of the 2013 Euros and Worlds, team selections will be determined at selection events run in early January 2013. Attendance at the team selection events will be confined to people who are ranked in the top 4 in their respective divisions e.g., you will not be considered for team pattern unless you rank in the top 4 in your respective pattern division, you will not be considered for team sparring unless you rank in the top 4 of your respective sparring division. The exception to this rule is team power and special technique as there is only one division in each and we cannot select a team of six from only the top 4. There may also be an exception made in the case of an individual who had a lengthy absence from competition due to injury, travel or studies or an individual who has just been promoted to black belt but this will be at the discretion of the coaching team. The purpose of confining the team selections is as follows:
1 It ensures that our premier national events are well supported
2 It ensures that anybody presenting themselves for selection for an International team has a competitive track record and is competitive at a national level
3 It rewards form over the long term.
4 It ensures that the coaches have the best possible opportunity to assess potential combinations for the team
I hope you will agree that these innovations will strengthen the quality and depth of the national team as well as providing instructors and competitors alike with a clear and fair process for selection. As a coaching and management team, we look forward to strengthening the team further and to developing the structures that will generate sustainable competitive success for the national team. I will be available at the Irish Cup on Saturday 19 November if any instructor, competitor or parent wishes to discuss the process in detail with me.
